Countdown Coloured resins on board 244 x 122cm
Recently some of the old choruses that I used to sing as a child have re-entered my consciousness. Countdown is one of them and I find myself singing it a lot! The words can elicit a huge number of emotions and generally they make me feel a bit uneasy. Its this sense of unease that link this picture with the others in the exhibition 'Cracks in the empirical pavement'. The text style is one that I used to watch the beach evangelists use - they would turn up on hot summer days with their large boards already painted in with black boxes. As the gospel message was deliverd the letters quickly appeared with just a few marks of a brush loaded with black paint. The religious texts and verses were always foremost in my mind for a long time afterwards.
